By definition, protein hydrolysates are the products obtained after the hydrolysis of proteins by enzymes, acid or alkali. They are mainly composed of peptides and also contain amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals which make them ideally suited for cell culture media.

In previous years, fetal calf serum was a common supplement in mammalian cell culture to improve cell growth and increase cell titer.  With more emphasis on the manufacture of human therapeutics, production methods are coming under increasing regulatory scrutiny.  One of the concerns is the presence of animal derived components in media because these substances can potentially introduce contaminants into the process and therefore into the finished product.

Addressing this demand is the backbone to our animal free hydrolysate line of products for mammalian cell culture applications.  Our products meet the highest industry expectations including low endotoxin, high filterability, increased clarity and robust growth support.  Animal protein free media are currently the most prevalent platforms being developed by many companies. This type of media contains complex ingredients like hydrolysates.
